The warning is directed at children ages 6 and older, who use the drug and are at increased risk for heart and liver disease, seizures, and even kidney disease.
The FDA has also warned doctors and patients about the potential for serious side effects, including liver problems, high blood pressure, and a severe allergic reaction.
The agency also said the drug should be discontinued because of serious risks, such as kidney problems and death.
In June, a study conducted by a group of doctors and patients concluded that the risk of heart disease was increased by about 10 percent and liver problems, seizures, and kidney failure were more common.
The FDA also found that prescription drugs are not safe when used for the same reason, such as antacids and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, said Dr. Lisa Lupton, a senior vice president at the FDA. “There are no other FDA-approved drugs that are less likely to cause these serious side effects,” she said.
The new warning also says doctors should stop prescribing the drug because it is associated with a high risk of kidney problems.
“Patients should be very cautious when they have a prescription for Nexium,” Dr. Lupton said. “If they have these side effects, they should talk to their doctor.”
The FDA recommends that patients be alert to potential side effects and ask for medical advice if they notice any of the following serious side effects:

Dr. Lupton added that doctors should be careful not to prescribe Nexium and recommend that patients use the drug only if they are having serious side effects.
“This warning is only applicable to people who have had heart disease or are at risk for heart disease,” Dr. “We urge all patients to seek medical advice before taking any new medications to prevent serious side effects.”
She also noted that the FDA advises doctors and patients not to prescribe Nexium to anyone with any serious heart or liver problems.
“It is not recommended for patients with a history of heart attack or stroke,” she said.
Lupton said the warning should also include an explanation of why taking the drug may be associated with a high risk of kidney problems, seizures, and death.
“If you have a history of kidney disease, you should seek medical advice before taking any new medications,” she said.
