AstraZeneca, which manufactures Nexium, a brand-name prescription drug, had a hard time disclosing its full $4.2 billion price increase for the year to March 30.

The price increase for the generic version of AstraZeneca's drug was a little steep.

The drug will be available by prescription only and will be covered by most Medicare and Medicaid plans.

As for AstraZeneca, the price of the brand-name drug is $9.50 per 10-milligram dose.

The price increases for the generic drug are more than twice what the brand-name drug did in 2009.

AstraZeneca's price increases for Nexium, a prescription drug that has been on the market since its introduction in 2001, have ranged from $9.12 to $9.52.

The average price for a 12-tablet bottle of Nexium was $16.59 in the United States last year.

It's not hard to see why the price for AstraZeneca's brand-name drug might be higher.

"We do not have the opportunity to make a price increase for a generic drug, but we do have the opportunity to talk about what's happening with the brand-name drug," said Daniel Bremner, chairman and chief executive of AstraZeneca's research and development division.

Bremner said that at the current price of $9.50 per 10-milligram dose, it is unlikely to be covered by all plans.

"The overall benefit is not that high, but it is going to be higher for the brand-name drug," he said. "We think we can help make the drug more affordable."

In addition, Bremner noted that the AstraZeneca brand-name drug is not the only pharmaceutical company to have been affected by a price increase.

On Wednesday, the company said that it had "reported a price increase of approximately 15 percent for the year to March 30 from the previous price."

Bremner said that he was not aware of any specific changes in the brand-name drug's cost, but said that it was a good idea to talk to your insurance provider.

Bremner also said that he believes the price increase for AstraZeneca will help ensure that Nexium continues to be covered by Medicare and Medicaid.

"We are having to address the issue of drug pricing for patients who don't need the medication or don't have insurance coverage," Bremner said.

"The current price of $9.50 is going to help us in the long run."

The price increase for the generic drug will be higher as more patients are prescribed the drug.

"If we can help bring down the price, the price for the brand-name drug will be higher as it's more expensive for patients," Bremner said.

AstraZeneca has received final approval from United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorities in a deal to acquire the rights to Nexium from Mylan Inc for $2.3 billion, following the firm's agreement to pay $1.2 billion in cash and $1.1 million in stock and limited liability company equity, Bloomberg reported. The agreement is expected to close in the first quarter of 2013.

Nexium was the biggest pharmaceutical product in the U. S. market at $1.4 billion in sales, accounting for 27.1 percent of total Nexium sales for the quarter, the company said. It had the second-best position in the market with $1.5 billion in sales in 2013, with $3.9 billion in total sales. However, AstraZeneca said it had "substantial" market share and the firm would continue to provide important information to investors about its product.

The deal was the second of a string of AstraZeneca agreements to receive FDA approval for Nexium from the U. Agency for Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The deal was announced last year by AstraZeneca, while Mylan, which is the owner of a separate company called Actavis, was a partner to AstraZeneca in the same business. The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2013, ending the first half of 2013.

AstraZeneca said that it had signed a definitive agreement with Mylan to supply Nexium to more than 3 million people in the U. for treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). The firm would then be able to purchase Nexium from Mylan for $1.8 billion. The drug was expected to earn around $1 billion in annual sales in the U. for Nexium.

AstraZeneca reached an agreement to acquire the Nexium business from Mylan in February 2014. The deal was announced in a letter signed by President Obama and Pfizer's chairman and CEO and CEO, Richard Gephard. The company said it had "partnerships with other pharmaceutical companies for additional commercialization opportunities."AstraZeneca also entered into a "firm-to-stock" arrangement with Mylan to purchase the rights to Nexium from Mylan for $2.3 billion. On April 1, 2015, the U. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a marketing exclusivity period for the drug, AstraZeneca's Nexium, for one year from its patent expiration. This exclusivity period would provide AstraZeneca with the opportunity to market the drug during that period. The drug would be sold under the AstraZeneca brand name until January 1, 2017. The Nexium exclusivity period was extended in order to allow the drug to enter the U. market in time for the launch of the next full year of AstraZeneca's product. AstraZeneca has no plans to extend the exclusivity period, however.
